Geneva High School Drama Club presents of one of the most influential horror movies of all time -- "Night of the Living Dead."
Based on the screenplay by George Romero and John Russo, and adapted for the stage by Lori Allen Ohm, a satellite probe shot to Venus returns to Earth carrying a mysterious radiation that transforms the unburied dead into flesh-eating zombies. Seven people trapped in an isolated farmhouse, held hostage by the ravenous ghouls, begin to turn on each other as the dead encroach. A gripping terror-filled monochromatic play that brings all the fright of the cult classic to life, this blend of thrilling horror laced with touches of black humor envelops the audience in the action and unfolds into a shocking theatrical ending.
Siblings Johnny (Marshall Keaton) and Barbara (Hannah Schoonover) are paying their annual respects at a family grave when the first encounter with these beings gruesomely takes place. Barbara soon finds herself in an abandoned farmhouse where other survivors try to make sense of the evening’s strange events. She is joined by Ben (Josh Jones), a strong-willed man with a plan to make it through the night, and Tom (Anthony Luzzi) and Judy (Grace Pilet), a young couple on their way to a nearby lake. Adding tension to the mix is Harry Cooper (Adrian Cowles), an ornery family man who has his own ideas about how to stay safe, his wife Helen (Jasmine Bush), and their ailing daughter Karen (Charlotte Adams-Brooks), a recent victim of the attacks.
Split between floors of the farmhouse, the strangers take turns exploring ways to survive. With the help of radio and television news broadcasters (Hailee Holliman and Mackenzie Myers), a zombie expert (Sharon Caito), and the town Sheriff (T.J. Schuhle), the refugees desperately hang onto any string of advice or hope available to them. In the end, though, it’s everyone for themselves. Will there be any survivors?
Also featured as a cast of zombies are Andrea Blake, Alex Biehls, Erica Christmas, Kiley Conklin, Noah Cox, Jen Czaplak, Alex Dowd, Angelica Marin, Gloria Merced, Layne Moffett-Corron, Kelsei Morlang, Sierra Olschewske, Annie Wilsey, Jacob Wilson, and Josh Watt.
Josh Jolly and Adam Murphy are stage crew.
Additionally, local band El Kabong (James Eddington, Aaron Holland, and Zachary Schoonover) share the stage with the actors, performing their original score that adds to the dread and tension.
With the unique vision of director Kevin Schoonover, stage manager/make-up artist Mary Schoonover, and technical director/lighting designer Bruce Purdy, expect a wild ride of chills, thrills and maybe even a few laughs in this homage to the famous 1968 horror flick.
"Night of the Living Dead" is intended for mature audiences.
The final dress rehearsal at 7:30 on November 1 will also be open to the public. In lieu of tickets, the cast and crew request that patrons attending this performance bring canned or bagged pet food or litter to be donated to the Beverly Animal Shelter. Drama Club started this tradition in the spring with it's production of "Cats."
