Controversial Chinese Film Premieres at the Smith Opera House
"Lust, Caution," director Ang Lee's follow-up to "Brokeback Mountain" is a quietly compelling drama of hidden desperation and fierce passions.
A spellbinding spy story of desire, hurt and nerve-rattling betrayal, "Lust, Caution" puts fervent novices in a deadly game of covert defiance. This time the setting is Japanese-occupied Shanghai early in World War II.
Suspenseful and sexy, with sets, costumes and cars that recall another place and time, "Lust, Caution" nonetheless has something very modern -- or timeless -- going on: the urgent, all-consuming desire of one human for another.
It is rated NC-17 for scenes of explicit sexuality and has a running time of two hours, 38 minutes. It is in Mandarin with English subtitles.
