The Geneva Historical Society concludes its fall lecture series on the War of 1812 on Thursday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. with the program, “Geneva’s Hugh Dobbin and the War of 1812” by Society curator John Marks. John will discuss the War of 1812 through the experiences of local militia officer Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Dobbin (1767-1855). He will focus on Dobbin’s involvement in the war and on his experience living in western New York as a veteran of the still-young nation. Using the Historical Society’s extensive collection of Dobbin’s military and personal papers, John will put a personal face on the lives of militia men from this area. The talk will begin with a brief overview of the War of 1812, discuss the differences between the regular troops and the militia, and then focus on Dobbin’s role in the war. It will conclude with a discussion of his post-war life in the Geneva area.
This program is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities.
