The best is world beat music returns to Geneva, on Friday, January 25 when Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams bring their unique "alt-country, roots rock" sound to the Smith Opera House.
This is the first concert in the theater’s 2008 "Passport World Music Series."
In 1998 Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams emerged from the misty hills of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. and exploded upon the Hudson Valley music scene with their stunning self-produced debut release, "A Good Thief Tips His Hat." The quirky quartet then began touring throughout the northeast and rapidly developed a fiercely loyal, all-ages following. Featured recently in Relix Magazine, the New York Times and on the CBS hit show, "Joan of Arcadia," the band’s charismatic live performances and whimsical blend of folk, rock, hillbilly and pop have simply captivated audiences and critics alike.
Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams defies categorization. They are not, as their name suggests, on the map of Eastern Europe, but are somewhere between folk rock and Woodstock-era rock revivalism reminiscent of Bob Dylan or Neil Diamond. Not imitators, the Circus forges their “own trip” -- a combination of earthy electrified sounds and spiritual lyrics. The music of Slambovia has been described as "Hillbilly-Floyd, folk-pop" and "surreal Americana." Dancing freely between existing religious and philosophical mythologies, their music is not only uplifting and empowering but also lots of fun.
The band’s charismatic live performances, optimistic uplifting tunes, and whimsical blend of folk, rock, hillbilly and pop have captivated audiences and critics alike. Their show is a rhythmic carnival of music for all ages. Concerts attract die-hard folkies and hard rockers, aging baby-boomers in tie-dye, college students, and children, too.
Tickets are $15 general admission. Series subscriptions are also available for $45 -- four shows for the price of three. Series subscribers also enjoy the benefit of the "Passport Ticket Exchange"
whereby if you are unable to attend a particular performance, you can use the ticket for another performance, give it to a friend, or invite someone to attend a future performance with you.
The 2008 "Passport World Music Series" is sponsored by the Greater Rochester Association of Realtors.
