Join us at the Geneva History Museum for a night of 1940s radio and fashion programming for Geneva Night Out on Friday, January 2, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. In this last decade before the television took over the American living room, families gathered around the radio to hear President Roosevelt talk about the nation, Depression and war. They enjoyed the religious broadcasts of Fulton Sheen, the comedy of Fibber McGee and Molly and the dramatic Adventures of the Thin Man. Radio was a central source of entertainment and information for Americans of this era and was shaped by their concerns and interests.
 
Fashion during the decade was constrained by Depression and war, but heavily influenced by the dramatic looks of film stars like Veronica Lake, Joan Crawford, and Rita Hayworth. From penciling in stocking seams to wearing wooden wedge heels, women and retailers took the challenges of rationing and turned them into fashion statements.
