SUMMARY:Historic Marker Dedication Washington Street Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 27\, 2015 at 1 p.m.\, the Geneva Historical Society and the Founders Square Neighborhood Association will dedicate a new historic marker at Geneva's oldest existing cemetery. Established in 1832 by the Village of Geneva\, the cemetery originally stood on the edge of town and was one of two burying grounds in the village. Most burials date from the 1800s\, prior to the opening of Glenwood Cemetery.\n\n \n\nFunding for the new marker came from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. One of the Foundation's two main initiatives is to preserve our history through the Historic Signage Grant Programs. The Foundation believes that historic markers play an important role in local historic preservation by educating the public and fostering historic tourism. Launched in 2006\, the Historic Signage Grant Program commemorates historic people\, places or things by awarding grants to install historical markers. As of December 2014\, the Foundation has funded over 250 historic markers in 42 New York counties.
