A matchless string of hit records\, the constant impact of radio broadcasts\, and the drawing power at theatres\, hotels\, and dance pavilions built and sustained the momentum of popularity. Glenn Miller was particularly noted for arranging songs around a clarinet and tenor saxophone playing melody\, while three other saxophones play the harmony. His arrangements\, seamless and rich\, are acclaimed by a large variety of fans due to the many types of big band music played. The band played everything from hot jazz to popular ballads. Miller disbanded his musical organization in 1942\, at the height of its popularity\, volunteered for the Army and then led the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to entertain servicemen until December 15\, 1944\, when Major Miller took off in a single- engine plane from England\, never to be seen again. Today the 19-member ensemble continues to play the original Miller arrangements as well as more modern selections in the Big Band style\, carefully selecting only those tunes that lend themselves naturally to the Miller sound. From "Pennsylvania 6-5000" to "Moonlight Serenade\," "String of Pearls" and more\, that classic Glenn Miller sound lives on. Audience members inspired to get up and cut a rug are invited to do so -- the first two rows of seats will be (temporarily) removed to allow for a sizable dance floor.
